At the time it was a "face value" coin........so not really a big deal. Put a hundred or more years on it.......

I kind of like holed coins, adds character, removes price, makes them affordable.

Yes it really is best to avoid holed coins since one does not necessarily know the reason for the holing.

There are a few holed coins in my collection but these two are pretty scarce in any condition:

1798 poltina (1/2 ruble)
Holed-Coins

1798 polutinnk (1/4 ruble)
Holed-Coins

I bought them at perhaps 20usd and 1 usd respectively. If they weren't holed, I would expect to pay at least a few times more, perhaps even close to hundreds of dollars. For fillers, I personally don't mind. I haven't found any holed examples since then.

Yep, got a bunch of these--my dad had them--I don't think he would have paid $10 for this one--I think he got them at coin swaps. It makes me ill when I look at the dates and how nice it would be to have the coins without the holes!

Found a nice 1859 IHC in a bunch of wheats the other day with hole. Still worth the 3 cents I paid for it.

The 2 coin changes that made me ill where a 1895 S Morgan with a hole on ebay and an XF 1895 ? Morgan that someone had ground off the mint mark to try and pass off as 1895. This coin was in a Morgan album and they did a pretty good job of it, you had to look real close to notice. What some people won't do to complete a set.

Yup !....that "elusive hole" just eats and eats away at people until they do something rash to fill it !....
Rest in Peace

Well, the fad used to be that people would drill holes in them and wear them on necklaces, bracelets, ankhs, ect. But today it makes me want to break them in two. Once I saw a quarter eagle in great condition for an unbelievably low price, but when I looked closer I noticed that little hole. It made me soooo mad!

I was at an antique store, and the owner was selling foreign coins, that had holes drilled in them, and were in a sort of bracelet thing.

i saw a guy in NYC selling bracelets made of old coins I don't remember the dates or types but they were definitely worth more than the 5 or $10 he was charging for them if they didn't have the holes punched threw...i wanted to punch him.

HI
I could be remembering incorrectly but I am sure I heard somewhere that some coins were used for replacement buttons for soldiers during war times?
