There's no 1923-D, besides the date is worn out. I wonder what makes him think its a 1923 to begin with.

No question it is a 23 in my mind. I know what partial dates look like from going through thousands of Buffalo nickels. As for the mint mark, I think it is a counterfeit D. Or possibly it is an S in which it was hit in a certain way on the mint mark so that it now looks like a D.

The pictures are not detailed enough to zoom, but the mint-mark appears to be manipulated.

The D is mushy; as in the coin has been altered.

well I came acrossed it to me it doesn't look counterfeit after some looking I thought I figured it out but I was wrong there was no 1933's minted..so the search goes on

After blowing up the reverse of the original picture provided, it is clear to me, at least, that this is an S. On worn coins, the S gets worn down quite a bit. So 23S for sure. Even if this were another year in which both D and S were made, I'd bank that this coin was an "S" mint mark.
