Somebody needs to define "in circulation." For example, I have some banking to do this morning. If I ask and they have 2017 coins, does that count, or do you have to get it in change at McDonalds?

I haven't seen any cash this year yet... All transactions were by card so far. Here it usually takes quite some time before new coins hit circulation, also because not every year has every coin minted: circulation is slow and mintage low. I do recall that I was in The Netherlands when the Euro got introduced, in 2002. I already got Spanish euro coins on January 3rd, then. That went extremely fast.

with twalisa. I would personalty define "In circulation" as any coin not bought from the mint. Getting coins from banks and change being fair game. Thoughts?

I suspect it will be a few months before I see any in circulation. Nevertheless, I'll keep an eye out.

I'm not expecting anything for another couple of months. Every year about March I get shiny new shield cents in change from buying breakfast tacos at a cash-only stand down the road from my house. Looking forward to it (and the tacos).

For me, "in circulation" means exactly that--coins that are being circulated, i.e., what you get in change. I think that going to a bank and buying hundreds of rolls of whatever just to find a certain coin is cheating in a way. It's like an athlete who is on steroids versus one who isn't. They're both trying to achieve the same goal, but the roid-boy is using a very exacting and specific technique that lifts him out of the realm of regular people. He doesn't have to do it, he chooses to do it. And it gives him an unfair advantage. Bank coins, to me, are just that--property of the scary, dour-faced grown-ups at the bank. Coins I get in change are mine.

Buying rolls from the mint is one thing, but the coins you get from the bank are still in circulation, even if you can get them in large quantities. That's just my opinion.

Ok since I started this thread I will clarify in circulation. What I mean by in circulation is getting it from a business or from the bank. Not by buying them on ebay or from a coin store. If you buy them from ebay or a coin store and still want to show them off go ahead and do so but I will not classify them as in circulation. I also saw this on Coin World. For the first time cents minted in Philly will have a P mint mark for 2017 only because it is the mints 225 anniversary. http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-co...st-time.html
