152787426864"Coin was in a 4 coin "Pocket spill" found with metal detector under a fallen tree on forest floor along Comeau lane in Woodstock, NY. A 1910, 1911 & 1914 wheats were in same hole at depth of 2 inches. Date is readable--- but mint mark is only visible at an angle when viewed with a lighted 20x loupe. Position of the mint mark starts at middle of gap between "9" And "0" And, right side of the "S" Ends at the middle of the "0" The "VDB" Initials are visible under the same conditions of viewing. Coin was cleaned with hot hydrogen peroxide solution and buffed with wet 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper to remove corrosion from pine needles and heavy iron content of the soil." *** Edited by Staff to Add Year / Mintmark / Denomination to Title. I see enough of the VDB but I can't make out an S. Nothing more fun than pocket spills.

It may have been at one time. I see the '09 and I think I see the VDB, I just don't see the S in these photos. What a great find if it is indeed what you suspect it is.

Nice find! Is this the location where it might be the S Mint Mark that you are seeing?

Seller states: "COIN WAS CLEANED WITH HOT HYDROGEN PEROXIDE SOLUTION AND BUFFED WITH WET 1000 GRIT WET/DRY SANDPAPER "
I cringed.

I'm "sure" it's an S.
I don't see the "vdb'.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

All I see clearly is the 09. You can see almost anything you want to see in the mishmash everywhere else around the date.

I can't really see the S, although I can see the VDB. And if it was found in New York it seems to me more likely to have come from the Philadelphia Mint than SF.
Regardless, an awesome find for sure! Very cool to find coins that have been under the ground for (probably) a century!

I don't think NSS found this coin, I think he posted it here for ebay reporting reasons.

Possibly send it to a TPGS for grading.

Love these finds. My advice is obviously don't butcher the coin. Find some good advice on doing what needs to be done to help identify your coin. Don't be impatient which is the hardest part. Read. Learn. Then decide if it is worth the the time to grade...only if you want to sell. If you don't want to, then it is your treasure to cherish. Fun topic either way. Diamonds in the Rough as I say

Quote:I don't think NSS found this coin, I think he posted it here for ebay reporting reasons. It does seem that many missed the fact that nss-52 didn't find this, just posted the ebay listing. Quote: and buffed with wet 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper I think my thumb is equivalent to 1000 grit on a good day. On a bad day?... 120.
