Svalbard has a status aparte within the Kingdom (we even have to go through passport control as it's technically outside Schengen in order to get there). Russia has the right to exploit mining activities here, so Svalbard can be seen as a strange cooperation between Norway and Russia, described in the Svalbard treaty. As such, Svalbard has issued some coins in the past: the Svalbard Ruble. In 1993, the issue of a new coin series led to a diplomatic riot, as the new Svalbard Ruble explicitly read '#1056;#1054;#1057;#1057;#1048;#1049;#1057;#1050;#1040;#1071; #1060;#1045;#1044;#1045;#1056;#1040;#1062;#1048;#1071;', or 'Russian Federation' on the coin, which is completely against the treaty and a breach of Norwegian's status as sovereign country. Norway demanded that all coins should be destroyed and that this coin wouldn't get any legal status. The first batch was completely destroyed. However.. .there was a small second batch. No one knows exactly how big this batch was, but it was significantly smaller than the first one. Probably just a few thousand of each coin survived and it's generally considered an interesting curiosity. Report this Post to the Staff
