Quote: A 5% return does lead to profit, why do you think people invest in Treasury bills which pay annual returns oif 0.59% or bank savings accounts that pay a 1% annual return. Like I said, the primary detracting factor here is the risk of fraud if your attempting to sell through ebay. A 5% return over a matter of a few days is a great thing (especially with the power of compound interest). Taking them to a coin dealer that you regularly visit anyway has no downside.
Well, yes exactly. I go to him every week or two anyway. When I'm still too young to get a job, simply holding $10000 in star notes that I'm allowed to look through is fun. I culled out 4 notes, for various reasons, so I'll post pics tonight if I have time.

I've been working for 30-ish years now, and I still think holding $10k in cash would be very fun!
I think you are on the right track; pick out any "special" numbers, sell what you can to your coin dealer, and take the rest back to the bank. You also post an ad here for a few days and see if you get any bites before returning them.
If any fresh packs of notes bearing potential good serial numbers come through the bank cash room (or through an armored car company) you can bet your bottom dollar that solid serial numbers and extremely low serial numbers WILL BE PULLED! It is not rocket science for a cash handler to look at the top note in the pack, or brick, and know exactly what numbers might still be in the pack.
It is rare, almost unheard of, for a solid serial number or extremely low serial number to make it through the cash handling systems and find it's way to the end users like us standing at the teller window at the bank.
Same thing with these star notes. They may have a high book value but if there was a potential for a quick profit of a couple of hundred dollars they would have never made it to the teller at your bank.
Give the money back to your Dad and say "thanks, but this didn't work out" and treat it as a learning experience.
Interesting thread. One thing makes me curious - don't you have to fill out a special form in order to receive or deposit $10k or more in cash? And they let you do that as a teenager?
You can get a money market account or CD that pays 1-2%. So you probably have to sell 2-4 of these notes a month to beat plain interest. Fun learning experience for you though - at least you're guaranteed not to take a loss on it ( ebay fraud notwithstanding).
