Look at the bottom of the "C" in PCGS on the bottom right corner of the slab. It's a bit flatter than the real deal.

The counterfeitors will use a distribution chain here in US, won't they?
Only if you consider ebay a distributor! Ultimately, I think ebay is in a better position to help stem this tide. IMHO, if enough people get burned, they would have to.

Maybe as the counterfeiters increase output, the prices will drop and people will start collecting these counterfeits as an inexpensive alternative to the originals.

There goes the common argument that so many make that buying slabbed coins helps them avoid counterfeits and over grading. There is no substitute for knowledge in collecting and it is getting harder for the new collectors to stay safe. One of the reasons I kind of have an aversion to paying a premium for a slabbed coin in one of the four top companies holders is that they would someday be counterfeited. That day has arrived. Thanks Bobby!

Why anyone would buy numismatics from China is beyond me.

well before the fake slab thing you could have thought they were legit, I am sure not everyone from China deals in Fake coins only and some sellers are legit. Before this happened I wouldn't have bought one from China that wasn't graded by a reputable TPG, not thats not even good enough. I still think its going to be the sight unseen buyers that are going to be the cause of these coming into the country and changing hands a few times before they are identified as fakes

What is PCGS doing to fight these fake PCGS slabbers?

Also, I've heard there was a "fake slab scare" in 1989. Can anyone update me on what happened? How did PCGS deal with it?

I talked with Ron Guth at the Chicago International show about it but unfortunately I'm not really at liberty to discuss too much about it.

As to the 1989 "scare", it wasn't really a scare there actually were fake slabs at that time. As to how they handled it then, well at that time the fakes were being produced and marketed by a dealer in California and it was pretty easy to trace them back to him. So only a relatively small number of fakes were produced before the dealer was arrested, charged with fraud and imprisoned. If the chinese get themselves a distributor here in the US PCGS will be able to close him down quickly. What makes this time more of a problem is that there is no way to shut down the source in China so they can keep producing and using overseas distributors or keep getting new US distributors.

Hmmm, disturbing. It's nice to know PCGS is acting on these fake slabs anyway. Will we be seeing a new generation of slabs?

Rest in Peace

If they ever catch these people, the penalty should be severe! Just make sure they don't prosecute them in California. They will just get a slap on the hand.

Nah, they'll be prosecuted in China and when they show the government how profitable it can be, they'll get a new partner.
