Hello, all.

I have an 1803 no-stems Large Cent that I cracked out of an ICG holder, graded VF20. It sat in my Dansco for quite a while and this morning it was sent off to PCGS.

I have noticed that the vast majority of time PCGS coins sell on Heritage for a sharp premium over ANACS and ICG coins of the same grade. In my opinion this is usually unjustified.

So I'm curious if my coin will come back with the same grade, or perhaps (sigh!) a jump to VF25? We shall see, I'll keep you posted.

In my opinion it has strong VF25 details but it also has a couple very mild rim bumps. So I think ICG got it right and I can't wait to see what PCGS has to say.

My "test" is only one coin so it's not scientific by any means, but it's still fun

Good luck... PCGS are fairly harsh on any kind of damage and it might come back in a Genuine holder.

ICG is typically pretty good with classic coins but they do have a bit of a liberal reputation on moderns

While I generally agree with you but in this case I really don't think it will. A while back I was looking at a 1799 Dollar at a coin show. It in a PCGS F-15 holder but it definitely had solid VF details. It also had one major rim bump, deep enough that I was shocked they didn't body-bag it. As the owner explained they simply lowered the grade based on the rim ding.

I think what it comes down to is what is considered "damage" vs. normal wear and contact for a coin. There are lots of Morgans that are battered with contact marks (which is really a form of damage) but it still isn't considered a "problem" coin. I think there is a level of rim dings that are considered acceptable, and I suspect they're more lenient with early coins. The rim bumps on this cent are very minor.

Of course, you could be right and I'm obviously hoping otherwise. As I said before I'll keep you posted.
