correction: I know that nearly all of you knew about HA (Heritage Auctions), but I did not know anything about http://www.greatcollections.com until recently, and thought there might be a few here that did not know about them either.

Ace, I am just being a nosy person here, but can you tell me why you sold that coin as it must have been the centerpiece of your collection, and how much did you get, and who did you sell it thru?

if you do not wish to say, I understand. just call me mr. buttinsky...

When it come to precious metals, especially seeing as how you are looking at it as an inheritance I would pass on that coin. I have seen/heard to many times people taking in an inheritance to coin stores/pawn shops/gold and silver buyers and getting less than spot.

That may have been a limited edition, but to every non collector it's a chunk of silver. I think you would be better off buying 100oz bars if you are looking for a big piece of silver.

btw, I decided not to buy the coin. the way I figured it, the spot or melt price for it was $2,176. he was willing to sell it at $4,800. minus $400 in fees, he would have gotton around $4,400... twice the spot price. I even offered him $4,400, which would gave net him $4,000. no go on that price either.

of course he has that right and that is fine, but as one said here, spending twice the spot price was just too much for me. I agree that it will problably be for sale for a while, but if he is in no hurry and such, I would be happy for him when he did sell it.

I got a few more-or-less unusual or limited coins on ebay right now, priced at what I consider a reasonable price, but nowheres even near twice the melt or spot price, not even close. I would just be making a few hundred dollars on coins that cost me around 2,500 to 3 thousand dollars.

I agree davec13... unless you are a collector, it is just a hard to sell lump of metal, and likely to be bought at a coin shop at a lot less than even spot price. I can just see it being sold at one of those "cash for gold" places.

I made provisions in my will to make that difficult for him, plus I have had a talk with my son. he understands and is pretty honorable to me. of course, when I am dead, who knows... but nevertheless, your point is well taken... mike

I sold it through a location auction house to my city in Vancouver, I bought it for $10,600 and I had an agreement (reserve price of $10000) the hammer price was $9600 (I think) but the winner had to pay taxes and a buyers fee. I think they ended up paying something over $11,000 for the coin.

As I mentioned, the coin was amazing, however I never once displayed it for the entire time I had it, it was locked up in the hard pelican case it came in. stored in my bedroom.
