What is your opinion on long term storage of rolls of nickels? Paper or plastic coin holders?

Long term, I would go with paper.

And I think an important concern is where the rolls are stored. My bulk coins are in a closet, but I plan to deposit most of them tomorrow at my bank when I go pickup Dollar Coin rolls to spend. My collection is in a safe with moisture absorbing Gel Packs inside.

My father's uncirculated nickel rolls are in clear plastic tubes and paper rolls. He collected them in the 1960s. My mother has kept them at various times in the garage (in a southern state where it gets very hot), in the attic (same heat), and in a closet. Last time I looked at them I could see no change in them and they still looked as new as the day they were minted.
Rest in Peace

You want to store any kind of rolls in plastic tubes with or without the paper wrapping , in an environmental safe location .Not to hot ,not to cold and definitely no humidity .

Moisture is the evil nickel killer. Close fitting plastic tubes do the job well.

Either one works, as long as the environment is moisture free.

I like plastic myself, but paper should be okay if it is the right kind of paper and kept in a climate controlled location.

If you use paper rolls, you must store them in a dry place. If you are using plastic, you need to make sure it is sealed tight or else it would trap moisture if not tightened enough. I prefer plastic. Paper rolls also degrade with time, so for long term storage plastic is a better option. Another disadvantage of paper is that mould and fungus can grow on it.
