Does anybody know how safe a coin would be to handle with this coating ? I love the look of it but I'm just wondering if it's anything close to say Mercury for instance.
For what I know, ruthenium is in the same class as platinum. As ruthenium coated coins aren't appearing very often (I love the look, though), I'd personally treat it like a platinum coated coin, as both elements have a lot in common.
I'm going to bet all of the classic issues are going to be well circulated and not look as good as the "fluffed" images. I do like the look of the Kennedy half and would really like to see an older high relief example.
I just googled the MSDS sheet and it's classified as inert and non carcinogenic.
I've seen ruthenium plated coins and they are more of a steely grey in hand. The photographs always make them look midntight black but I have not seen one that actually looks that way
Ruthenium is not known to cause any adverse effects for people, so that coin, although not recommended, is safe to handle. I do not recommend handling the coin outside of its packaging as your handling of the coin will cause it to oxidize.
