Ok day 12 brings us the double clashed E 1886 O Morgan dollar. Sorry for keeping this short, but I am suffering from what the medical people call mild discomfort.

Sorry to hear that -- and I am well aware of what 'mild discomfort' actually means.

I have learned a lot from this thread and enjoyed your excellent pics.

Feel better soon!

Day 13 of the Clashing brings us the 1886 O VAM-1a2. This clashed variety is found in 4 to 7 clash types, and all are considered to be one in the same. This variety is also vary grade sensitive with only 2 known in mint state.

Sorry for the bad photos I will try to put better ones later, but its the best I can do currently.

Day 14 bring us the 1887 P VAM-1b E Clashed dollar. This variety is scares in general but they are still found in the wild today. The overall known population is well under 75 examples and any AU grade coin is a monster, and any Mint State coin being HUGE! with only 2 MS examples known!

This variety is seen with a worn or weaker E and a bold clash, earlier die states in this coin are far more desirable.

Day 14 of the clashing brings us the 1st part of the 1888 O VAM-1a series with the V-1a1. This Clashed Morgan dollar had a relatively long die life with at least 1 die breakdown and refreashing that can be clearly seen on early V-1a3 coins. The VAM-1a1 designation is straight forward, the coin will have no break though the "R" in PURIBUS, but under high magnification a light stress crack can be viewed.

As far as grade sensitivity, any MS-65 coin is a great coin and is hard to come by and there is only 1 known finer. Low and mid MS coins are still found without much trouble, and carry a little premium. Providing the coins isn't a "Bag Monster" With availability being somewhat good, I would hold out for a nicer one or a less baggy one!

Day 15 of the clashing brings us the 1888 O VAM-1a2. This is the most common in this variety as the designation for a VAM-1a2 is the E Clash plus the KEY WORD "Displaced field break" in the "R" of PLURIBUS.

The 3rd photo down shows where the VAM-1a2 begins. After looking over hundreds of V-1a1 and 1a2 varieties, we have come to the consensus that once the radial break "passes the center loop in the "R" and starts to run down towards the leg of the "R" displacement happens. Its at this point that the given coin is viewed as a VAM-1a2. The VAM-1a2 though its progression can be found with grease filled areas on the reveres die where much of "TRUST" is not present and the crack also becomes very wide.

All of these features can be found on this variety in its progression and "Are the same Variety!" As lower mint state examples are not overly pricy collecting a progression set in this type is rather Cool!

The VAM-1a2 is the most common and lower MS grade examples tend to be 3 to 4 times multiple off common sheet price. truly superb MS grades are uncommon. Keep in mind the die has a wide radial die break, so as a coin is being struck the die itself was expanding in width! That expansion reduces the amount of force within a strike "making a full strike Impossible"

Day 16 of the clashing brings us to the last or terminal die state of the VAM-1a varieties with the VAM-1a3.

In this die stage the "KEY designation" is the protruding die chip in the radial die brake that runs out of the "L" of the LIBERTY Cap Band! Once the die brake has this large chip in the break that runs out of the cap band you have the VAM-1a3.

Also of note on this coin you will find some post polish "waves" in the field off the forehead and nose. The areas fields are not flat or true and give nice mint state examples an remarkable look, from mutable directional cartwheeling "but without tilting the coin".

Their are few VAM-1a3 coins in MS 64 with only 1 coin above the MS-64 level with that being an MS-64+

Day 17 of the chasing beings to the 1889 O VAM-1a1 E Clashed dollar.

The VAM-1a1 has a few things going on that make finding mint state examples extremely difficult. Not only is this an E Clashed die pair, but the obverse die became cracked above Ms. Liberty's head and left a stressed area from the rim above the "O" of "OF" on the reveres. from the clashing.

Current population of mint state examples is only 3 with them all being MS-61 and a true population of AU-58 coins at 2. I have owned 2 of the 3 MS examples and the one I retained looks to be a bit nicer then the other IMHO.

This variety can still be found in VG grade from time to time but occurrences are becoming fewer.

Day 18 brings us Leroy Van Allen's favorite E Clashed Dollar "Dubbed the King of Clash" The 1889 O VAM-1a2 has so much going on its beyond funny.

The obverse of this variety boasts a deep "G" and "T" clash with a light "R" from trust as well with the "D" from Dollar between the I and B of PURIBUS as well as the "O" mint mark coming off the wheat stalk. The redial die break is also becoming much more pronounced.

The reverse has a doubled clashed "E" that is much bolder from the second clashing and the "B and R" are also found. The reverse of the coin also has the designers initial "M" clashed above "I GOD WE TRUST" and a displaced radial die break runs from the rim into the Eagles shoulder.

This is the terminal die state of this variety and based on the vary short or low population. Any VAM-1a2 in any grade is a find!

With less than 6 coins in mixed AU grade and about as many known in XF this coin is "RARE!" The coin shown is the only AU-58 known and the variety has "NO KNOWN MS EXAMPLES"

OK Sorry for the delay, but I had to pick up a new camera.

With only 2 other E Clashed dollars to post in this tread we come to the last progression group. VAM-3a1 E Clash has a nice some what strong E Clash and to date is not known to be in mint state. This is a vary hard coin to locate in AU-58 with only 3 total examples known across the 3 major TPGC.

Well with only 2 E Clashed dollars left.....I forgot 1 that will get posted Sunday Opp's.

Today we have the 1891 O VAM-3a2 E Clashed dollar. This variety is the terminal die state of the VAM-3a1 and has a wide spread die break running thought the "O" of Dollar! This is one of the more difficult varieties to find in AU grades and has only 1 mint state example known of all of the VAM-3a group, being a MS-63.
