Is their such a coin as a Syrian 1950 20 and 10 lire gold coin? Krause doesn't list them and I can't seem to find pictures of them on the net.

Thanks.

In 1950, the Syrian pound (or livre) was a smallish gold coin, weighing about 3/4 of a sovereign. A 10 and 20 pound gold coin would be quite large; larger than just about anyone else was issuing in 1950.

It doesn't appear to be a Krause glitch there aren't any "missing numbers". And there aren't any Syrian coins listed in the "Unusual" Krause book.

So I'm not sure what's being referred to, here.

Syria did produce a gold pound and half pound coin in 1950 (KM 84 & 86). Since the denomination is in arabic and not english it is possible your source may be confused:

I recently bought a 1950 Syrian half pound ex. John J. Pittman collection.

It may be a long shot but since this coin is dated before that sale and from Syria I thought he may have bought it in the Farouk sale.
It's not a particularly rare or expensive coin (mintage 100,000) but like many of Pittmans coins it is of high grade.

The 1954 Farouk sale catalogue lists only one Syrian gold lot-#1285 containing 2 1950 20 lire and 2 1950 10 lire gold pieces in MS "very rare." Apparently hammered at 34 pounds!
