Take this coin to a local coin shop or two or three to get their opinion before you send it off to a TPG.

I have never been able to make the drop test work. Give it a "heads or tails" flip. Your fingernail is too soft to do any damage to the coin.

Copper cents ring until they land back in your hand. Zinc cents go 'Tink' and then go silent. The difference is pretty dramatic.

Waiting to hear more

I got a little scale (borrowed from a mate) and it rang in at 3.0g

The coin on ebay also weighs in at 3.0g.

It was verified by NGC.

@Finn235: Gave it the flip test. It rang, but not the entire time. To be sure, I tried it with a verified copper cent and got almost the same results. The ring on the verified copper cent was a bit longer and more "ringy".

Im not sure about sending it off to a TPG, because it could get lost in the mail or something. Happened to me before.

Can it be verified without TPG?

TPG is the best thing to do. I would risk it but, if you really don't want to, you could wait till a TPG is at a coin show and give it to them there. But they would still have to ship it back to you.

Like I said, I would risk it.

Sure you can, the vast majority of 1983 Zincolns will display some degree of bubbled plating whereas a bronze alloy cent will not

If it has bubbled plating, you can eliminate it as a copper cent.

If it does not have bubbled plating, like this coin, will you always say --- "that's a copper coin!"?

I should have clarified that when I said "you can't tell by looks" what I meant was you can't say it is definitely copper just by looking at online digital photos.

It's a scratch. I noticed there was copper (orange-ish metal) underneath the scratch. Normally a scratch like that penetrates the thin copper plating, showing the silver-colored zinc underneath. Is this true?

I checked the coin in real life, and no bubbling was present. That still cant rule out zinc though.

Imma try to get better shots tomorrow, but its dark right now.

It's the cents symbol: ˘ - so people know that it's worth one cent.

Heh.

I need honest opinions, so I know if to chuck it in the "zinc" pile or "special keepers" pile. Thanks.

I would send it to ANACS, NGC, or PCGS via Registered Mail, with Certificate of Mailing, Signature Confirmation™, and USPS Tracking®.

You receive $50,000 insurance, and it's very unlikely that the USPS will lose it with all that. (They have lost a couple of my packages over the years too, so I know what you mean, although they were not sent via Registered Mail.)
