Obverse VF25 Reverse VF20 Net VF20
1798 Draped Bust/Heraldic Eagle Dollar Knob 9 Obverse/Tilted 8 Nearly Touching Bust Arc Star Reverse Variety: BB-95, B-7, R-4
The Sheldon Scale R-4 Very Scarce (population est at 76-200)
At R-4 this is a pretty scarce variety. Might receive a premium price from a specialist in this series. Congrats.

Surfaces look polished in the images so while it might technically squeak out a VF20, I would value it as a VG if purchasing it as a raw coin. Buyer beware.

I wasn't that concerned with surfaces, although my antennae are up since you bring it up. What did concern me is that the reverse shield is worn much more than the rest of the reverse devices indicate. That shield is what I would expect from a low VG coin.

My first thought when I saw the pic without reading the comments was that shield has so much more wear than I would expect looking at the rest of the coin.

Don't take the wear on the reverse with a grain of salt, federal type pieces are known for weak strikes on certain areas/dates. They didn't take nearly as much care of the dies that your modern mint employee would. But I do agree on the consensus, it appears to have been cleaned at one point.

Clearly a split grade - I agree with NS at VF-20 net.

I thought it was polished too. Being on the rarity, I assume this is a market acceptable cleaning.

I don't see as market acceptable for cleaning. It was quite harshly polished. It would be in a slab if it was problem free. That being said, it's not a bad coin. I like it.
