I think it looks more like a D was chiselled off of it. Could have been an S. Could just be an abraded mark on a Philly cent. What does the rest of the coin look like?

COuld be the lower "belly" of the S...or could be P or D.
I can "imagine" the S ... a closer pic can confirm or disprove that.

If you are talking about that redish spot,it is way off of where a MM would be.IMHO.

When posting images to ask a question about a specific part of a coin, please try to center the image, crop out blank (non-coin) areas of the image, and make an indication of what you are asking about. Maybe something like this...I think you will get much better responses when we all can easily spot the area in question.

As a rule of thumb , when a color change follows and defines the anomaly in question then it probably happened after the strike and should be suspect.

It is not raised. It maybe a discoloration of the planchet in that area.
