I'm going to pass as well but I'm doing so because the selected designs are terrible, not because we're commemorating a sport.

I'm comfortable saying basketball is more popular in this country than is numismatics.

I also have no problem with the fact that it's a sport, the major sports including auto racing and horse racing are a big part of the country and many of them aside from football are very popular in the world as well. There's nothing wrong with commemorating them, they just should actually be nice to look at

Looks like colorized half dollars and dollars are coming with this program:

Quote:
For 2020, introduction of the three-coin Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Coin Program is not yet scheduled, as research continues at the Philadelphia Mint on how to colorize the silver dollar and copper-nickel clad half dollar. The program also will offer a gold $5 coin that will not be colorized.

Mint officials have not disclosed how they plan to implement the colorization, whether through adjustments in the metallic composition to meet the designated color, or by a surface application, or with some other technique. Officials also have not disclosed what color or colors are planned to be used and whether the same color or colors will be used on both the dollar and half dollar.

The Mint is not planning to begin production until sometime in February at the earliest.

Baltimore Spring Expo is March 19 - 21.

The Basketball HoF products will be available for sale on April 4, 2020, at 12 noon (ET).

So, no they won't be available at the Spring Expo.

Baltimore Summer Expo is June 18-20.

They should be available at the Summer Expo (unless they've sold out, which IMHO is doubtful).

Afraid not. The booth personnel adhere strictly to the release date.

According to a Coin World article:

Quote:
The U.S. Mint will be using an outside contractor for applying color to the colorized versions of the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame silver dollar and copper-nickel clad half dollar.

The Mint informed Coin World Feb. 20 it had just approved a contract with an undisclosed outside vendor to execute the colorization.

The Mint will open sales for versions of the Proof and Uncirculated dollars and half dollars without colorization on April 4, along with the gold $5 coins to be minted only in noncolorized versions.

I don't know how y'all feel, but I consider the colorization of coins outside the U.S. Mint as Post-Mint Damage ( PMD). I don't believe the major grading companies have been authenticating coins with third-party colorization, so why should they start now just because the U.S. Mint will be selling the coins once they have been colorized? Will this colorization outside the U.S. Mint now legitimize all the coins that have been colorized by collectible companies over the years?

Also, I wonder if the U.S. Mint is actually just shipping the new commems to the Royal Canadian Mint, since they're such experts in colorizing coins.

I believe they will, because the Mint did the colorization, or at least authorized it as part of the process. PCGS has graded colorized coins before, and labeled them as "colorized", like 362923358620 and 362922177014.

Edit to add: Since those links may eventually disappear from ebay, PCGS has a TrueView image of one of them at https://www.PCGS.com/cert/38711733

I'm glad to see that non-colorized versions of the coins will also be available; I expect that they will be my preference.

Of course, Alpha, those examples were likely colorized directly by the respective mints and not contracted out for colorization.

I guess I just don't like the novelty aspect of latest modern commemoratives. I begrudgingly accepted the dome designs, but I want nothing to do with the colorization of U.S. Mint commems. I have all the modern U.S. Mint half dollar and silver dollar commemoratives since 1982, but I think the road will end for me in 2020.

A good point, and I didn't notice the distinction until just a few minutes ago -- I was thinking mainly of the horrible painted State Quarters and the like, while this is a Mint product (even if they don't do the whole thing).

I have one colored piece, which looks good for what it is. But I do prefer the look of pure metal, so this one will probably be unique in my collection for some time.
