I feel the same as Tonyb441 immediately above. My coins are due "by the end of the day" on Thursday (6/11). Can't wait to toss them in my safe deposit box. That is if my bank branch ever reopens so I can get to my box.

Opening sales for the HoF kids set are 20,280. Pretty poor but understandable given the ridiculous price. These may not even sell out...

As would be expected, the first day of sales for the 2020 Basketball HoF coins was definitely the biggest sales day so far - Day 1 sales are the primary contributor to the sales of each option since! I can't imagine that overall sales are meeting expectations, however. I'm guessing that the Basketball HoF folks were expecting sales to be more in line with what was seen with the Baseball HOF coins back in 2014. It does not appear, however, that the big dealers in modern US material, along with the primary grading services, got behind this one to drive the market into a frenzy as they did with the Baseball coins. IMO, one contributor to the slower-than-hooped-for sales ( ) is likely collector apathy for the coins themselves (for one thing, Congress needs to stop legislating that the same design must appear on multiple coins in a program!), another is likely connected to the financial uncertainties related to the pandemic and the higher-than-previous issue prices for the coins. I think the biggest factor, however, is that the Baseketball HoF coins do not seem to have the same level of dealer support behind them as did the Baseball coins. On Day 1 of Baseball HOF coin sales, dealers mobilized their forces to secure as many of the coins as they could and submitted them to the grading services for special inserts. Is this going on for the Basketball coins? I haven't read much other than the fact that special labels are available from the grading services and that PCGS is the official service. Sales are not currently showing evidence of wide-scale bulk purchases! Following is a quick comparison between Day 1 sales and continuing sales through June 7th (per US Mint report): Proof Gold $5: Total Sales = 5,750 / 1st Day Sales = 3,921 (68.2% of overall total) Unc Gold $5: 2,519 / 1,640 (65.1%) Proof Silver $1: 44,215 / 32,414 (73.3%) Unc Silver $1: 14,395 / 10,325 (71.7%) Proof CuNi $0.50: 18,312 / 15,028 (82.1%) Unc CuNi $0.50: 9,709 / 7,747 (79.8%) Kid's Set: 20.280 / 11,474 (56.6%)

Perhaps the lackluster sales will cause the US Mint to think twice about sending away a quantity of these coins to a second party for colorizing. Let's hope so anyway...

I do wonder how much of the depressed sales are due to people waiting for the colorized version. Buying all at once, or buying only that version.

That is what I was thinking on the Above message. Suppose the US Mint Allocate's the Colorized Versions on your Initial Order of June 4, 2020

Quote: I do wonder how much of the depressed sales are due to people waiting for the colorized version. Buying all at once, or buying only that version. I agree, it's almost definite that a percentage of folks held off making a purchase until the colorized versions of the silver dollar and/or clad half dollar were available so that they could make a future combo purchase. Let's look at one potential future scenario... If every purchaser of a colorized coin also purchased one of the plain coins to go along with it, it would add 150,000 silver dollars and 150,000 clad half dollars to the sales total. (The US Mint has stated that 75,000 colorized version of each denomination were to be creaaed.) If you add 150,000 to the current sales total of 56,610 silver dollars you get a new total of ~206K which would leave about 194K before the maximum authorization limit of 400,000 is reached. If 150,000 half dollars are added to the current total of ~28K, you get a new total of ~178K coins sold which would leave ~572K of the 750K authoized half dollars available for purchase. In neither case would total sales be knocking on the door of a sell-out. FWIW, I don't think every purchase of a colorized coin will be accompanied by the purchase of a plain coin. I believe that some collectors will pursue only the colorized versions. Back in 2016, the Royal Canadian Mint ( RCM) released a silver $20 curved basketball coin that was colorized. I haven't looked into it all, but I wonder if the RCM is the USM's partner for colorization?

If the NGC/PCGS Coin Registries include both the regular and colorized versions, these collectors will need everything to keep their sets complete, although such registry purchases are usually from the secondary market. This may be a very costly affair for the registry folks.

I received the clad and silver proofs today. The basketball looks very nice in hand; very detailed. The info card that comes with even has a rough surface to mimic the bumps of the ball.
I'll try to get some pics up tomorrow.
I do wish the Mint would stop packaging coins without a ribbon to aid removal. Especially with these domed coins, they stick them in concave down and it makes removal more difficult. They did this last year with the Apollo coins too.

As promised, pictures! Silver, reverse: I really like the detail on the basketball. There's a slight scratch on the case near the Center of the basketball net. The coin itself is fine. Silver, obverse: This actually looks better in hand than the sales pictures suggest. Silver, packaging: As noted above, the basketball on the info card has a texture surface. But no ribbon! To remove the coin, I pulled out the base and slowly worked my way around the edge, pulling the packaging away from the coin while also applying slight pressure from the bottom. Essentially no damage to the packaging, and my fingers are fine. Clad, packaging: The design is the same, so this mainly shows the sleeve both boxes came in. And this one gets a ribbon.
