I've got bad pictures and high hopes! Isn't that how some of the threads in this subforum start? (Well, my hopes have been tempered a bit, as I'm under 50% now, but I figured I'd let you pros school me on why I was wrong!) A local estate sale auctioneer has a 1873 IHC listed in a lot of three with a few junky ones that deserve a details grade. I noticed a little noise in the headband, but it seems to be in the wrong direction? Let me know what you guys think.

Regardless of it being a dd or not, it is still a fairly expensive coin.

Oh hey, Devin. They have a 1877 IHC in your price range too. (Accidentally wandered into the "want" section of the classifies here yesterday instead of the "sell" section.) The lot of three (1873 plus junk) is at $100 now, so it wouldn't be worth it unless it IS a doubled LIBERTY. The 1877 was around $250 last night. I can link it if you want, but they only do local sales -- pick up, no ship. Still waiting for IHC expertise! Thanks!

Which doubled LIBERTY DDO are you thinking of? The big one is on the " closed 3" date obverse style. The obverse shown above has the "open 3" date. There's a diagnostic for the 73 DDO that's visible in all grades, even with LIBERTY and the feathers worn flat--the upper lip under the nose is doubled. In higher grades, strong doubling on LIBERTY, the eye, and most feather shafts is easily seen: And here's a diagnostic pic for the two date styles for 1873 (the closed 3 date is scarcer and carries a premium)

Picture is blurry for me to tell for sure. Here's a pick of a true double LIBERTY - maybe you can match it up..

The only 1873 Open 3 DD Liberty variety that I know of is S-2, with a minor doubling in the letter L. Not a scarce issue.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I spent all my time trying to make something of the headband, and I didn't look at the date more than once.

Glad to pitch in. This DDO is one of the most spectacular in the IHC series, and indeed in all US coinage.

I agree with what's already been said. This is my favorite IHC variety by far, and I collect them in any grade or condition.

Quote: I collect them in any grade or condition One of my favorites too--how many have you found? I have to spot one that doesn't get into a huge bidding war.
