This coin wasn't deliberately vandalized but fell victim to a lawnmower! It's a 1946 (50% silver) English shilling! There again, I suppose it could have been a victim of the dreaded axe coin-murderer!

Quote: It seems victim of target practice.. That's possible. but I found it in what had been an immaculately tended private estate that was being redeveloped as offices. The lawns had always been well maintained and I found several other coins with mower damage. Also, the coin appears to have been almost new when damaged, and a shilling would have been quite a lot of money to waste in the late 1940s / early 1950s. But it's an interesting idea!

Sentimental value overrules the damage.

i also have this 1865 Three Cent piece, damaged, and with a great die break on the reverse. check it out. there's a keen die break above one of the drill-holes on the reverse. I see the denticles are misaligned on the broken piece. there might be a little clashing in that field to the one side of the wreath leaves, hard to tell. anyone have an overlay of a three-center?

Man, that poor 3 Cent piece! It makes me sad that someone drilled holes into it. Still an interesting coin though.

Sure that 3 cent piece was part of a bracelet. Proof it is possible to love coins too much.
