I found these 3 Kennedy halves recently (circulated customer rolls from bank), and I am somewhat confused about the different strikes. Can someone please educate me about what's going on here? It is too my understanding that all 2002-S Kennedy's are Proofs, however compared to the 1972-D and 1985-P, the 2002-S Half Dollar looks like a regular Business Strike coin. Then again the 1985-P and 1972-D Halves do not look like your typical coin, they appear to be more Mirror-Like or Proof-Like, very reflective, but do not have frosted Devices or vice versa like a Proof coin would have. I understand that circulation and environment will play a role in appearence, but what am I missing here?

The 1972 and 1985 coins you have are polished coins. They used to be business strike coins, but someone altered them. They are now worth what it says on the reverse of the coin. On the 2002-S halves they are proof coins. There were clad and silver ones that year. So you might check the edges to see if they show cladding or are the silver examples.

The edge deff. shows clading, and also consistantly weighed 11.3g on my small pocket scale, so no silver there, oh well. Now I just can't beleive someone bought this proof coin for X amount, then at some point spent this coin at face value, for me to buy this coin from a local Bank for 50 cents. As for the other 2 Halves, that makes sense why they are mirror like, I never even considered that, I have a few other denominations of coins that have that same look (1970-D Jefferson and 1943 Wheaty). I wonder if they trying to make them look as Proofs in hopes of a profit? As always, I appreciate the education and guidance!

Sometimes coins are stolen and cashed in for face value. Sometimes a collector passes away and the relative get rid if the change not know what they had. So these two things can happen. Or a child found Grandpas' money and bought candy.

Since this older post about Halves I'd like to think I can now identify a polished coin from a Proof coin. So I CRH'ed a box of nickels yesterday and found this coin. However I do not think this nickel is a polished coin. I believe this one to be a circulated 1964 Jefferson Proof. Please correct me if I'm wrong. As soon as the roll was opened this one stood out with a wider, more of a squared off, mirror like edge. Then pulled it out from the rest and wham, it appears more of a deep, liquid metal look (If you will) than what the previous polished coins had. I would just like to know if this is in fact a Proof or some SMS/Strike/Finish I have not seen?
