How's it going guys? I'm trying to expedite my dime roll hunting. Have you guys had success weighing the rolls before you crack them?
I assume a clad roll would weigh close enough to the same number every time if the rolls are all in the same wrappers from the same sealed bank box.
I would think even one silver dime in a roll would affect the weight enough that I could just weigh the rolls until I find one where the weight is off and only crack those rolls. That way I don't have to waste time re rolling or searching clad rolls.
Would this hypothetically#8203; work?

Good question. A few issues that come to mind, which you probably have thought of already: 1) even machine-wrapped rolls have counting errors and come up short; 2) foreign coins have different weights and often show up in US rolls; 3) wear changes the weight of the coin up to 10% in some cases; 4) dirt and other substances can add weight in the course of a whole box.

Depends on the accuracy of your scale. A roll of new dimes will typically weigh about 113.50 grams. If it has a silver dime in it then it will weigh about 113.73 grams. If there are damaged or well-worn coins, this can get messed up, however.

I would not trust this method. Your numbers will be off if the rolls are short, over, contain foreign items, etc.

Agree just crack open the rolls yes it's time consuming but you may miss out on silver and other stuff if you go by weight.

Thanks for the reply guys. My scale is not very accurate. Centech from harbor freight. I use it to weigh the 1982 pennies I find. Just a passing thought. I'm starting to actually hate dime rolls. Nothing really to look for other than silver ridges. I guess I'll just have to keep plugging away

I have a very accurate scale down to a hundreth of a gram, and it is accurate on dime rolls. I get a baseline of a few dozen rolls from the box and it is pretty accurate.
I keep rolls that are very clearly loaded for a rainy day.

Well then maybe it isn't such a terrible idea. Meh, might as well try it with a box or two.

I still think time is better spent actually looking through the rolls. There are just too many variables affecting weight and I would be afraid of missing something. At the very least you should check the edges.

I have no problem getting a good premium 2-3x face or more for these coins on ebay in circulated grades, and much more for AU+ examples of the earlier dates mentioned. So, as a test I just weighed every roll in a new Wells Fargo box. Every roll went between 113.9-114.1 except one that went 116.4. I'm kind of excited to crack that one, but I'm going to save it for last to see if the theory would work for just hunting silver. I'm still going to crack the other rolls, even though I'm fairly certain they are all clad and from 1995-2007 like most of the dime rolls from Wells Fargo this week lol

At least .23 grams different. That's the difference between a clad dime weight and a silver dime weight
