That's Die Deterioration Doubling. It's a sign of a later die state coin, and will manifest itself as a secondary image towards the rim of the coin. In cents, it's common to see Die Deterioration Doubling on the last digits of the date and mint mark (if it wasn't minted in Philadelphia). DDD was my guess from reading your title, and your images confirm it.
