Hi,

I'm a newbie at all of this and I thought original packaging was super important. But it seems like that may not be the case for blue Ike dollars? Do UNC Ike dollars generally gain by being professionally graded? Should I rip them open? Should I rip them open and send them to a professional grading company?

I have :
3 very nice and lustrous 1974 S
3 very nice and lustrous 1972 S
2 nice and less lustrous 1973 S (one has three brown spots)
and
3 nice and less lustrous 1971 S

Here are some pics. It's hard to show or even see how lustrous they are because of the packaging, but they are not mirror-like as I have seen others are. Some of the plastics have scuffs but the coins are scuff-free...

Was thinking PCGS?

...So the blue likes don't lose any value by being out of original packaging?

It's confusing because Blue Ikes like mine can be found selling at 10$ on ebay, yet a post on CCF mentioned an MS68 selling for thousands?

http://goccf.com/t/276435 br /

I need some advice here because I dont want to waste money sending the coins if it's not worth it.

The coins appear not to have any visible scratches or nicks, but they are not super shiny. The 1971s appear a little dirty (I suspect the bins they were in were kept in a humid space).

What to do, what to do?

To the CCF!!

I take all my blue Ikes out of their mint cellophane. I don't like the residue the cellophane leaves on the coins. Don't know if this hurts their value or not. Just a personal choice on my part.

As for sending them in for grading, this is a risk when it comes to Ikes. If they grade anything less than MS68 you would be losing money. To minimize this risk I would take the best looking one out of it cellophane and take good clear pictures of Obverse and revers and then post them here in the US Modern Coin grading forum. See what the community would grade it first.

Anyways that's just my humble opinion.

Thanks!

Sorry it took a while to reply, but I did it! And the coins looked much nicer out of the cellophane! I will start posting for grade opinions asap!

I really appreciate you taking the time to answer me. Sometimes the answer seems obvious, but I just need to have proper validation before jumping into action...!

Thank you thank you!

I have looked at your other grading topics and have commented. They are my opinion only, especially since I have a difficult time grading from photos. Even though I am an Ike guy, I can be and am often wrong.
