It's graded au-53 by PCGS and I know the guy who sent it in. He is NOT a big auction house.

My first thought was that it's XF, although the details are very good on such an old coin. The lack of luster brings it down somewhat, though. It could be anywhere between XF and AU.

Quote: It's graded au-53 by PCGS That's an extremely generous grade. You can easily find AU-53's with better eye appeal, and without the environmental damage and apparent old cleaning. As it's been said, buy the coin, not the holder.

The details are present and so is the problems, I wouldn't assign a no more than a EF-45, and as mention, PCGS graded generously.

Respectfully disagree. This has every bit of AU-53 sharpness by any grading standard.

And I would say that is why there's difference in assigning the same grade that doesn't have the eye appeal from another coin of the same year. I agree the sharpness is present, but there's also extra hits that I would not grade that high.

I can see it being graded AU53 and also agree with ArrowsAndRays: "You can easily find AU-53's with better eye appeal, and without the environmental damage and apparent old cleaning."

MikeF: You've been posting a lot of Seated dollars and if you are specifically looking for an 1865 in AU53 then you could wait a while to find one. I think ArrowsAndRays (and me) were referring to this as a type coin (No Motto Seated dollar) in AU53. I know I was. Also, the market likes orignal coins but does not like black coins. By all means buy what you like but if do consider resale value then I'd pay accordingly for very dark pieces.

I'm making progress but finding slds with original skin is no easy task. You can view my current collection on this thread. http://goccf.com/t/287788

Two different certification numbers. The cert.# 81237522 is not in the PCGS database. Evidently the coin was broken out and resubmitted ? Good advise BH1964

I thought you were comparing the numbers from the photos. Checked it with the listing and you're right. Someone cracked it out and resubmitted. I've got 6955.53/81237522 before And 6955.53/83469047 after.
If they were looking for an upgrade they didn't get it.
