AU-50 + sharpness and okay. It's better than okay if there is any luster under that toning. It does not appear to be hairlined which would indicate cleaning. A great many of these coins are darkly toned. It comes with the territory.

I think many are used to collecting Morgans or are used to seeing dipped/cleaned slds. The one thing I disagree with you on is that luster affects the grade in AU. From what I have seen, luster has no impact on the net grade for this series in the eyes of the tpgs. The sharpness of the devices is what determines the grade. At least according to the many, many coins I've looked at graded by the big three. |

They are like every other die struck, non Matte Proof coin. They were there when the coin was struck. An AU coin has to have at least some of its mint surface remainng. If it dosen't, it's not an AU. |

This coin brought a very solid price of $2937.50 in the most recent Heritage auction. While the prices for
nice original LSD in the AU grades have receded a bit IMO, Civil War dates always seem to be popular
and in demand.

I was the under bidder. Whoever I was bidding against set a high limit order. The bids against me were automated. Seems to be the case lately with heritage signature auctions. Theirs always some crazy who's willing to pay any price on the choice coins I go after.  |

Actually the winning bidder was following the auction and bidding live via Heritage/Live. Mike, you are no more
crazier than he is when you outbid someone for a coin.
Sometimes when you are the under bidder it is not a bad thing.

I believe Dick Osburn is referring to the "technical detail" of the coin as being 55+ and
not the overall grade of the coin.
