Please do educate me if I am wrong. Don't these different die attribution wizards for early dollars rtake all this into consideration?

I haven't looked at the wizard link, but, yes the "wizard" tool should take care of all the diagnostics needed to determine markers on all die varieties (assuming all are listed). However, a match to a specific variety alone is not enough info to "guarantee" the coin is genuine. Since many "fakes" are made from casting genuine coins, this may not be enough data to determine its authenticity. Specific gravity/weight would be needed also. The overall look of the coin can be "off" and require further investigation. The experts are fooled every day as counterfeiters are getting better all the time. Perhaps billjones could elaborate further than I, as I am certainly not an expert.

Thank you for this clarification. I was figuring if a coin was put through this filter, the best match to it would be the best to then study further (as I posted).

If I did find a coin that passed all of the above, and was raw, I agree, specific gravity, would be the next step. I see where the fakers are making good enough MOrgans that they weigh within tolerances and have the same tonal ring. Admittedly though, I have yet to see one posted that will pass scrutiny as above. Cast coins normal are not all that hard to tell either from their lack of details and sometimes very porous (micro) surface.

Unfortunately the other threads I posted about a FE cent, fake tombac nickel, and a few others were some of the first I did here before knowing I could post the pics directly to CCF. the images were posted to an image hosting site and are now gone. Maybe I will redo them sometime.

These counterfeits are disturbing. There was another one of a similar vintage dated 1800 on the PCGS blog. The person who posted the pictures was asking if he should send to PCGS and what grade it would get.

This stuff is really bad for the hobby. RWB, who is one of the formost numismatic researchers and writers around today asked, "Where is the ANA on this issue?" I have the same question.
