@thelionwarrior Sorry for such a delayed response, but I don't think either of those would qualify. One place to look first is the rim. On your two coins, a silvery color can be seen showing through which indicates that the dark color is only on the surface and has been worn away with circulation. That suggests some sort of environmental damage. I believe true Black Beauties are a consistent color all the way through. However, I haven't had the guts to cut one of mine in half to prove it! On a different note, I decided to send one of mine in to ANACS to be graded/attributed. It's the 1958 at the very beginning of this thread. I figure it will top out at MS-63, but I'm hoping to get it into one of their special Black Beauty-label slabs.

Hi Spruett. I'll still be away from home another three weeks or so, but if you send me a PM in late August as a reminder I can send you a pair of BU black beauties and you can cut one and do whatever to the other one to appease your curiosity. Just be sure to post the results here. Over the past few years I have had the opportunity to go through dozens of BU rolls from the black beauty years and have rather a lot of them. Sending you two to experiment with seems worthy, and since they are directly from BU rolls there is very little chance they have been tampered with.

The results are in! I have to say I'm pretty satisfied with the outcome.

I thought this was an improper annealment issue, not an alloy issue. You may have an error coin in an error holder.

Quote: I thought this was an improper annealment issue, not an alloy issue. I've seen both descriptions on ANACS slabs and I don't know when or why they changed it. As far as I know, there is no official consensus on the cause, but I personally believe the alloy mix theory.

Here's one of mine. I sent these images to Paul Hanan in Wisconsin. Paul is a Master Die Variety Examiner for CONECA. After an exchange or two, I shipped him the actual coin (just the Black Beauty, not the reference coin). I have others from other years, and I needed a good compass. Paul confirmed the authenticity of this one. It makes identifying the others a great deal easier for this novice. Kevin

I will let the experts decided if this is a black beauty, but fantastic example regardless!

So, other than my avi coin, I'm not normally a big error person... That said, I've been seeing coins like the one on the right of this post the past several years: http://goccf.com/t/288744&whichpage=12#3000572A 2017-D nickel which looks to be improperly annealed. Since I go through a ton of nickels, I've seen these from time-to-time, and have been setting them aside... Going through my collection, I have at least a couple of 1958 Black Beauty Nickels and several 1959s... I've got a few others I think that also are, but they're not as in good condition as those above... So this brings me back to the 2017-Ds... check these out: I just happen to have a couple of rolls of "normal" BU 2017-Ds... put them side by side with the ones I've pulled and the difference is pretty striking. I also recently set aside this 2019-D Nickel which seems to also have similar annealing issues... also, note the light streak from 10 o'clock to about 4 o'clock on the obverse.
CRH Nickeloholic. 1,600,000 nickels searched in eight years! Have found FOUR complete Jefferson sets!
