This definitely seems to be the head of 36 and I dont believe tha there is a large and small 8 variety for that. I think that all head of 36s have the same size 8 which is roughly the same as the small 8 variety. The 2 pickup points for the head of 36 are the length that the cap protrudes past the hair and the base of the bust is narrower (pointy-er) on the 36. Report this Post to the Staff

I have never seen a 1970 P LMC with a large/small date classification. Nor any 1865-1909 IHC with an "L". or a number of other examples. IMO When a TPG identifies a coin, it suggests other varieties exist, and that is not the case here. Report this Post to the Staff

I purchased it from Heritage. Their descriptions was as follows: 1835 1C Small 8, Small Stars, Good 6 PCGS. PCGS Population: (1/93). NGC Census: (0/0). Heritage did drop the ball on the population information.The PCGS website lists 168 grading occurrences for this variety. NGC indicates that they have graded 302 1835 Large cents but they do not break them down into varieties. So you have no idea how many similar 1835 Large cents have been graded.
