Sorting out nickels at the moment... came across this bag of unusually clean V nickels and Buffalo nickels... with a few War Nickels and foreign coins thrown in for good measure... I wonder if grandpa put them into his rock tumbler... we will never know...

You can probably get a good idea of what happened if you examine them closely. Cleaned, polished, and/or dipped.

Do we need closeups and date sorting? What are the ones I need to look for?

Wow. They all appear to be plated, or at least highly polished. Some sort of deceptive monkey-business.
How did you come by it?

There were your grandfather's?
Can you weigh them?

These did belong to grandpa... he passed recently, and so I'm sorting through what I could find of his collection.
Alas, I haven't bought a good scale yet... tried looking locally this morning... but all I could find were digital food scales for cooking that went up to 11 lbs... but didn't have the accuracy of less than 1 gram... so I'll need to cruise the Bay and find something appropriate for weighing coins... it is on my to do list.
So far, I've just been sorting... not searching...
