Then I realized there are only 93 graded examples. I hope he appreciates how rare it is.

Nice - head of 1836. Lucky nephew. Make sure that you explain it to him...

How old is he? If old enough he will be happy.

He turns 8. Just about the age I was when I first got into coin collecting. This is graded and identified as the small eight, small stars variety. Is that correct?

Very nice gift include a write up of the coin's history, rareity, and value as it helps the new collector understand how special the coin is.

Around the same age I was intro'd to coins.
It's important that you make aware, this is a variety.
This could have shaped my collecting goals, if I had known. A very nice starter, btw.

I agree with BigSilver that it is an 1835 with Head of 1836. Actually a common coin. A very nice gift for your nephew and hopefully you planted a seed.

Interesting. I'm not seeing a head of 36. I agree with PCGS's assessment. What attributes are you guys seeing that I'm missing?

I am going by photos on the PCGS website. Go to the PCGS pop. report and pull up the 1835 Large cents. There are some comparable pictures of the different varieties. I was looking at the 10th and the 13th star in relationship to the portrait.

Hmmm... definitely looks like a small eight. Not sure about the stars. http://www. (207) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed .com/coins/212/large-cents/coronet-liberty-head/1835-P/all-varieties/
