Hi Everyone, it's been a while and I've just moved to nice house up in the Dunedin hills in the nice, rich, posh area of Dunedin called Roslyn over looking the sea. Anyway find this gem in a uncleaned lot I got few weeks ago. It's a very nice bronze Centenionalis of Gratian. More info Gratian, 24 August 367 - 25 August 383 A.D.
Gratian, son of Valentinian I, became the sole ruler of the Western empire in 375 A.D., and after the catastrophic defeat of the Roman forces at Hadrianopolis, the Eastern empire also came under his rule. To better cope with the empire, he elevated general Theodosius to the Eastern throne. Because of a shortage of coinage to meet the payroll, Gratian was abandoned by his troops during the revolt of Magnus Maximus. He was overtaken and killed while fleeing to the Alps. Pics.

Sorry to have to disagree, but from what I see, this coin has been stripped of its patina right down to the shiny metal. Far from being a gem it is ruined. I could be wrong and it could just be the lighting.

Others?

I wasn't sure if it was the lighting and it had that brown patina that is hard to photograph.
My initial thought was with Ellarby in that it had been harshly cleaned, some form of heat treatment maybe ?

@DW2485, perhaps you could briefly describe your method for taking coins from uncleaned lots to this stage? You might find that folks here have some pointers that will permit identification without harshly cleaning.

Hi guys, Thanks and it's the lighting and the photo was taken with a cellphone too. It's got a brown patina and I soak them in distilled water for a while and than a gentle brush too. Still got some soaking too. I'll take another photo of this one.

Glad to see it was just the lighting, but what a difference the quality of the photography makes. Could we see this coin without any covering material, in one-to-one imaging, with good lighting? If that cannot be done then scans of the two sides would be better than the handheld pics we have seen so far.
