Lighting Comparison - Smile Director Vs Lens-Mounted Diffuser

rmpsrpms Pillar of the Community United States 4038 Posts	Posted 06/10/2017 6:41 pm I shot a Cent using my original Smile Directors and with a lens-mounted diffuser to compare. Here's an animated .gif comparing the results. The Smile Directors were configured so the reflections are just outside the radius of the coin. This arrangement would work with a slabbed Cent, though this one is raw. The lens-mounted diffuser reflects within the radius of the coin, so would cause glare if the coin was slabbed. As you can see, same coin slightly different lighting technique gives a very different "look" to the coin. Crazyb0 Rest in Peace 10197 Posts	Posted 06/10/2017 9:18 pm Like the smile director, takes out shadow. for detail hunters like me, shadows make it difficult to really examine fine line differences. I tried multiple attempts at making a smile director and my results have been very disappointing. I don't know if it's the materials that I used or just my skill set.
