That is VERY cool Exoguy! I tried to google the address and the name of the pub. The only thing that came up were a couple former sales of coins with the counter stamp. A true piece of history.

Nice coins MikeF! I have only been collecting a couple of years, so most of what I have collecting is those coins that appeal to my eyes. So I really don't have that many SL or is it LS? However the history cannot be denied and they are starting to grow on me.

@ Mike .... The saloon counterstamps tend to be popular. Stack's sold one of these a few years ago, also on an 1858-O half but a higher grade host coin, for over $1,000. Sadly, I've not as yet been able to learn much about the issuer, Wyant, but he is listed in pre-Civil War directories.

How can you not love them?
What means more to me is the history each one of those coins represents..

I imagine he was the saloon owner and these coins were his savings hidden under the floor boards. I would go back and look at property records in Memphis during the period.

I can't find any of those for sale but would love to have one in my collection. You should start a thread so members can show off their counter stamped coins. That would be a cool thread!

Yes, he was the owner, listed in early city directories as such. The building likely no longer exists. These counterstamped coins typically circulated to generate word-of-mouth advertising; in effect, tiny billboards, these were.

Brunk recorded but four specimens in 2003, all being half dollars, and at least one more has since surfaced. The latest dated one of which I'm aware is 1858. The one I have is a New Orleans Mint issue, being downriver from Memphis. A half dollar was a lot in the 1850's and good for a pint of bitters ... booze. These LS halves once "sat" in the May Flower Saloon.

They are way cool nowadays, but just imagine living in a time where the dime, quarter and half all had the same design! (Same with the Barbers.) Seems to me those coins would get pretty boring pretty quickly.
