Edit of my original post...This time I'll be a bit more coy, with no direct links (lest anyone be uncomfortable with the idea): So I just received an email promoting a new dealer at the V mall. I must admit these three tets (two of which are sold already) gave me some pause with their flat fields (pressed?), shiny silver (with high silver content for provincials), lack of any wear, and very similar lettering. I also note that the placement of the epsilon and AVT - dot - KAI on the Septimius and Caracalla match, although produced (theoretically) at different mints and periods. Is this typical for these issues? Any red flags, or do these look kosher but just overcleaned? Curious to read opinions from the board's Roman collectors. Every time I look at the pics my eyes keep wandering from the coins to the Code of Ethics seal on the right. Romans are not my area. Am I just being paranoid? The dealer's pics and descriptions below. Septimius Severus AR - Tetradrachm Mint: Laodicia ad Mare Ref: Prieur 1163 Weight: 11.59 gm. Condition: Obv: XF / Rev: XF Lot RO52 Caracalla AR - Tetradrachm Date: AD 208-212 Mint: Antioch Weight 12.95 Ref: Mcalee 670 Condition: Obv:XF - Rev: XF Rare Portrait of Caracalla. Macrinus AR Tetradrachm Mint: Carrhae Ref: Prieur 824 Weight: 13.98 gm. condition: Rev: XF Obv: XF Edited by Kamnaskires 06/23/2017 8:36 pm

My first impression are they are fakes. They look way too shiny and new and not a sign of wear on them. Don't know if the powers to be at Vcoins are aware, I think I will drop them a line. I'm sure that others will also.

Bad news bears. Almost certainly the correct weight and metal content struck recently. These often come from eastern Europe.

I wouldn't touch these if they were on ebay. I certainly hope I am wrong, but my gut tells me this guy hopes to sell fakes to make an easy couple grand, then disappear.

Quote: I hope others contact Vcoins. Done. Also, another VCoins dealer (a definite good guy), who posts in another forum (where I also posted these coins) is outraged by this new dealer's listings. He also followed up by contacting V's management and, like you, Ron, he is encouraging everyone to do the same.

Masking reproductions with darkness is an old trick of long standing. As dark as he keeps his pictures I don't think he is going to sell much. It raises doubt right when you want to assure the viewer. He has a problem.

Just finished reading the posts from the other forum, with the exception of one person all believe these are fakes. I buy from Vcoins often and have had good luck with them and have grown to trust a good many of their dealers. This is one dealer that I will not be buying from.

I purchase a fair amount from V Coins dealers with no issues. This begs the question, however, to become a V Coins dealer does one just have to swear to the code of ethics and then sell what they want with the hope that they land a few uniformed buyers or is there a further vetting process. I wonder. Thanks for bringing this dealer to our attention Bob!
