@slider: I didn't, at our post office they don't have tape available to customers. But the post office worker usually puts a big piece of tape over the seal. I'm not sure if she did this time. However, there wasn't much weight in the envelope, so I'd be surprised if the seal broke regardless, especially since the submission forms that were wrapped around the coins made it. That being said, I've been surprised before! Here's one of the images PCGS sent me: Do note that the envelope was already opened by PCGS at this point. That bottom right corner does look a little chewed up though.

@nfine, and everyone else who wished me well on this thread: Thank you! I appreciate your kind words in this frustrating circumstance. It's really alright though, there are much worse things to lose than a few coins! So don't feel too bad for me, life goes on

darn. You would have spent less than $35 on registered mail too. Not to rub salt but unless the coins are under $1k or you want to save money and risk it registered is always the way to go. Or second best option is overnight for $25 + insurance

Quote: Have I heard about this before? Yes. It was said that one of the reasons why NGC moved out of New Jersey and into Florida was that they were having too much trouble with coins disappearing at the New Jersey post offices. I have never heard that before, is there any more of that story you know? Ironically, in the last year, of the 5 $100+ parcels that disappeared from our shipments, 4 were to Florida...

Upper left corner and lower right corner both look suspicious. The thief probably used a pocket knife (or razor blade) to make a small slit in the package and slipped out the four slabs. The thief knew exactly what he was doing and it was not his first rodeo.
Wonder how many packages have been received in pilfered condition at PCGS in the prior 90 days?
It would be interesting to see the video of PCGS opening the package. If the video has good resolution the damage to the package should be visible.

I have heard and read that Mr. Winston of the jewelry fame used to send diamonds and expensive jewelry through regular mail, uninsured, stuff valued at a million or more.

Just curious. Are packages weighed during transit? It would be interesting to see when the weight suddenly dropped.

We're lucky if they're scanned during transit for tracking, jakirwin.

For the future always use a box for the outer shell. Or use one of the express mail padded envelopes with a small flat rate box inside it but always have a box somewhere and have it taped very very well. Quote: What I might start doing is getting the PO to weigh all of my packages with valuable coins and giving me a record for the weight. They already do that. The scan in receipt has the weight on it if you don't just drop it off. Quote: I have never used a grading service but I think it would be good for each of them to have anonymous addresses; anything with PCGS or NGC in the address will be a signal for wantabe thieves. It really wouldn't matter. After a week or two with the amount of mail coming and going all the postal employees would figure it out

Quote: but your story reminds me about why certified mail exists Certified Mail is one of the WORST ways to send anything. I don't believe there is tracking and I'm not sure if you can even insure it. Registered is still the best way to ship valuables. A little slower, but a LOT safer, and usually cheaper unless you are shipping less than $1000. For the $34.40 the OP paid for the priority package he could have send a Registered package with a declared value of $8,000. Priority is for all practical purposes the same as first class mail with the same high insurance rates. $34.40 for a priority package would indicate a declared value of around $2,000 or so. I hate to say it but the OP paid about $10 more for a lot less security.

Another problem is the high amount of postage printed on the envelope is a dead giveaway that SOMETHING VALUABLE is in the package.
This package was screaming "STEAL ME" from the getgo!

I wonder if the thief knew that if it was actually delivered that USPS insurance won't investigate (assuming that's the case) and that's why he didn't just steal the package outright. Very sinister and I'm eagerly awaiting what they tell the OP

USPS will automatically deny the insurance claim on the first go around. The way they look at it the package was delivered and nobody raised a flag until AFTER the package was opened. It is now a "he said, she said" contest.
On appeal, USPS will again deny the claim. On the 2nd appeal someone at USPS will finally look at all the facts surrounding this claim and make a decision.
I doubt if they will pay the claim based on what is currently known. If they pay it I will be surprised.
USPS can be hard headed and a pain to deal with when it comes to the claim process. It is not cut and dried. The claims I have had were due to lost packages. Seems like it would be a no brainer.... They both went to the final appeal before they were approved for payment.
