My spidey sense was tingling, so I trolled for gems in uncleaned lots one day. Found one with horrible pictures, a vague and uncertain description, and a couple promising looking LRB's. Original owner had recently passed and the ebay was full of knick-knacks and collectibles. I put in a middling bid and won. There were almost no culls in the lot, but I think this one is the shining star: Crispus AE3 IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES Laureate, consular bust right, wearing trabea, eagle-tipped scepter in right hand. BEATA TRANQVILLITAS, Globe on altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX, three stars above Trier Mint Mintmark Dot PTR dot RIC 376, Rated R4.   There's a few more good ones in the lot as well; I'll try to get those uploaded. I know a lot of you know LRB's much better than I do, so did I get the attribution right? I don't see the leading dot in the mintmark but I figured it could have just been a filled die, like the altar inscription? |

Thanks all!
Whenever the LRB gurus roll around, I noticed that my example has a different orb than the one listed on Wildwinds; decorated with a large star rather than a cross and small dots or stars. Is this a significant difference?

The left exergual dot is weak but visible I think, way over to the left. I agree with the attribution RIC VII Trier 376. The upper three stars are on the edge in line with the inscription. The markings on the globe seem to vary a bit, but there is no special note about it by Bruun in the printed RIC VII listings. Quote:

Isn't Cripus Eastern Roman Empire? Or was it a bit before the empire split, I know he was after Constantine I so some time in the late Romn Empire.

Crispus was Constantine I's oldest son from his first wife. He never attained full rule because he was executed on trumped-up charges of trying to seduce his stepmother. I can't remember offhand if Constantinople was the new capital at that time, but historians generally consider Arcadius, Zeno, or Anastasius to be the first "Byzantine" emperor.

Sold For $65 CRISPUS, as Caesar. 317-326 AD. Æ Follis (19mm, 2.98 gm). Treveri (Trier) mint. Struck 322-323 AD. IVL CRISPVS NOB CAES, laureate bust left, wearing consular robe and holding eagle-tipped sceptre / BEAT TRA-NQVILITAS, globe on altar inscribed VO/TIS/XX, three stars above; PTR. RIC VII 376. Nice VF, light green patina, small hole in obverse, light encrustation on reverse. total not a R4 coin  Edited by imperator

Got a little chuckle when I saw this coin advertised on Facebook of all places: https://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/ro...Default.aspxI'll agree with Imperator; this is not an R4 coin by a long shot, but is a respectable specimen and hopefully still qualifies for the "rare" designator. |

Those rarity ratings are a nightmare Steve. The only oddity I can see on the coin is the way the stars above the altar are represented  There appears to be only 2 stars above and the 3rd is on the globe, no way there is room for 3 between the N & Q. May just be my eyesight but it does look odd, engravers error maybe ? |

Looking at the coin again, I wonder if maybe the third star is above the other two and just off the flan? Judging by the height of the letters, there could be room for another star up there.

R4 is extreme rare/ that are high rated coins
