Good points, but assume HA did their homework.
It's just a bad call from a company that charges a fee for sorting out the "best of the best".
They do themselves more harm than good on a submission like this.

This coin should not have stickered IMO and is a candidate for a buyback from CAC. They have removed other CAC approved coins from the market when issues were brought to their attention. I would like to think that this coin was set aside with other coins deserving of the CAC sticker and beaned accidentally. A call to CAC to bring this lot in the Heritage sale to their attention might be of interest.

Amazing - a coin goes through not one, but two sets of "experts" and comes up short. Forgive me for not being surprised or shocked.

Quote: So this is normal wear and tear for AU53ish? For a Seated dollar it isn't far off. There is a different standard for Seated dollars than Morgans or Peace ect. But if it wasn't for dings that coin would be a 55/58. Will CAC take the sticker off that at some-point maybe, but those hits also won't look as bad at real size and not the 30x on a computer monitor. It looks a lot better in the full slab picture.

Quote: And I sure as heck trust you guys more than for-profit corporations. CAC makes their money buying and selling the coins they sticker, not by stickering them. Their incentive is to not sticker things that they could never sell. Do they make mistakes yes they are human, but the nonsense theories that they sticker it because of back room deals is just that nonsense. They can't make money selling junk and would lose their reputation very quickly doing people favors with stickers

Time to throw ArrowsAndRays and Earle42 a bone. Looking through Heritage archives I found two previous auction appearances for this coin. It sold on 14Aug2010 for $692.30. At that time it was graded by ANACS as AU Details Net Au 50 Cleaned. It next appeared on 11Aug2011 in a PCGS 50 slab with a green bean where it sold for$977.50 .

Good catch, Everest!
While I'm not in the green bean conspiracy theory camp, I honestly don't see this subject coin as a mistake. I view this particular bean as bait for an unsavvy investor.

Right on Everest! Nice research! I feel sorry for the schmuck who paid $977.50.

I've said it before (maybe on a different forum though) - I think of PCGS as the bottom of the 3, with NGC and ANACS in 1st & 2nd respectively.

Great point, Beefer! Who would have thunk that the cheapest grading service was the one that got it right. I look at a lot of slds so this one stuck out like a sore thumb as cleaned. But not everyone looks at as many Seated dollars. It's the type coin guys that get railroaded. Someone should put in a call to CAC about this coin before the ANA show.

Perhaps the ANA needs to launch a national Public Service campaign: "Buy The Coin, Not The Slab" Would never happen, but fun to dream...

It reminds me of notorious art fakes. Everyone has a large money interest in discovering new and expensive pieces of art and not a shred in challenging the authenticity of a fake or overrated piece of art. All the middlemen get paid and the only loser is the end buyer.
