Hey guys I just thought of something . what if they already decided that the 2017 cent is going to be the last cent made for circulation . Of cause they won't let this slip out to the public ,then a massive hoard by millions of people would take place . Maybe they figured the last Lincoln Cent should be slightly different ,so they put the P mint mark on it . All other Lincolns minted will be proof only and in 95% copper .

That's a great topic. But I'm sorry, I just do not care if the P continues, or not.
I'm guessing we will have plenty of folks posting here thinking pre-2017 cents must be scarce without mint marks.
I suppose any reason to get folks looking at their coins is a good thing.

What does it cost them to make one cent? Two Cents?

the real reason that the mint did not put the P on them was that they were minted at other mints along with the ASE's. WP and S.

I might have voted against it if I were in the committee that made the decision, but I would not resign had I lost. Of course, I would have suggested putting it on the reverse.

San Francisco struck them 1978-1983 and West Point 1975-1986. Having P on them would be a lie. Adding W and S to them would just result in their hoarding.

It is 2017. Surprisingly, that excuse is more likely to be true than it was in 2015.

I have a different sort of OCD about this sort of thing. It seems so asymmetrical to have the absence of a mintmark denote one mint over all others while the other mints are denoted by their own mintmark. There is nothing special about Philly except it was first.

Quote:What does it cost them to make one cent? Two Cents? No the cost is way down due to the falling metal prices. It's down to 1.5 cents now. A 25% drop. Quote: BEP - Bureau of Engraving and Printing makes currency.
Oops.
It was the autocorrect, I swear. Autocorrect changing Mint to BEP? Yeah sure I can see that.

Quote: There is nothing special about Philly except it was first. The thing about coins not having a MM from Philadelphia always made sense to me. Not only was it the first US Mint, but at the time, it was the only US Mint, so there was no need for mint designation. I always just thought that a mint designation was needed for the 'new' mint locations, so that always made sense to me as well. It's my understanding that the P MM was out on the cent just for 2017 because it is the 225th anniversary of the establishment of the mint, and because the cent never had a P MM, it's like a special 'commemorative cent'. So again, it sort of makes sense to me, even though it looks odd. The shield? While the reasoning behind it makes sense, I find it to be an unappealing design. I think it would have looked better on the back of the dime. The torch and branches never made sense to me (anyone know their symbolic meaning?). TBH, the wheat stalks of the original LWC still doesn't make sense to me, but I do like it (but that could be due to getting excited when I see one, ever since I was a kid). I think that for the final year of the cent, (which is the coin with the longest continuous obverse design usage) they should reproduce the first. So if 1918 will be the final year, make it a 1918 VDB Wheat Back. Put Victor's initials right back where he originally designed them to be. ANd only have Philadelphia and San Francisco mint them. How awesome would that be?

You can view all 18 of the proposed reverse designs for the 2010 cent here: http://2010lincolncents.com/2010-li...n-proposals/What's interesting to me is that some incorporate an eagle. I read this about the design of the 1909 Lincoln Cent: Quote: Saint-Gaudens originally conceived a flying eagle design for the cent, but at Roosevelt's request, developed it for the double eagle after learning that by law, an eagle could not appear on the cent. The citation is a book I do not own: Moran, Michael F. (2008). Striking Change: The Great Artistic Collaboration of Theodore Roosevelt and Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Atlanta, Ga.: Whitman Publishing. ISBN 978-0-7948-2356-6. Is that law still valid? Also, does anyone have any knowledge of what law that would be and why it was enacted in the first place?
