I picked up this Byzantine AE trachy at a recent show. What caught my eye was how fundamentally smaller the coin is than the very common trachys you will see out there. The coin is 20mm at the largest diameter. There does not appear to be any legend. The weight is 1.27 grams.

Any thoughts?

When they are clipped like this they belong to the period of the Latin Rulers 1204-1261.

Missing legends make them impossible to identify accurately and so should make them less valuable, but cheaper to buy.

Still a nice coin anyway, with remaining details on the exposed high wear convex side reasonably intact.

Ron, just so that I understand, are you saying that during this period, the trachys were produced in this smaller size or that in the day-to-day commerce of this time period they were clipped down? I hadn't heard this before, so it is interesting to me--thanks!

echizento - good suggestion. I actually do think that the entire design is small, not just that the planchet has been clipped. I think I have a few trachy laying around, I will compare.

thanks!

Dave, at the beginning of the era they used earlier trachy and clipped the edges. Later towards the end of the era much smaller example were made poorly struck and much of the design off flan.

Here is one of mine that is around 15mm.
