Quote: I know all about coins not smelling right. Do elaborate please, what exactly seems off in your view. I'm very curious to understand your perspective, especially with respect to the Morgan. The early dollar I can understand, but the Morgan, in my eyes, seems like a very good example with no trace of the usual date/mintmark manipulation attempts.
The color and overall appearance (surfaces) are suspect. Again, nothing is obviously screaming counterfeit either but....
Chinese counterfeits have gotten so good that many have been authenticated as genuine by PCGS and NGC. At these price levels you can be sure the Chinese have pieces on the market that cannot be verified as genuine from the best images.
Actually Andrew has a valid point. That missing die scratch is a concern come to think of it. Here's my three leaves B-5 in vg-10. Even in a more worn down state it's very prevalent.
I would grade the coin XF Details ED. The ear, cheek, chin, neck are porous that appear to have been caused by environmental damage. The bidding most likely stopped at XF Details as a XF details grade puts the coin right in your paid price range. The coin appears genuine. If you get a XF straight grade, then you made a 5K score. There is also some details risk with the scratch that goes from the rim over the T and Y. If the coin does grade details, it is still a nice example.
That is the probable outcome. I anticipate some sort of a details grade but hope (obviously) for a solid grade. I'll post pics again once the coin is in hand and then again after submission.
MikeF - from your lips to god's ears. I would be if that happened. However, I do live in the real world and realize that if something is too good to be true then it indeed probably is.
Fair enough, but there is nothing I see that would trigger a details grade on this coin. Look at the porosity on my example. Flowing hair dollars enjoy a lot of leniency by the tpgs. I don't see anything on your coin that would justify a details grade.
Mike, can you allow for the possibility that the die scratch was removed and smoothed over and that would result in an authentic coin, but a details grade? There is a discoloration and a hint of the bar, so that is more likely in my opinion than a struck or cast fake of a perfect die marriage replica of B-5 without the one distinguishing feature.
The coin just arrived today from the UK and it's sitting with my doorman. I haven't seen it yet. I'll post a pic later on today focusing specifically on the scratch area. VERY EXCITING!
Weight: 26.53g Diameter: 39.4mm Non-magnetic but is in fact diamagnetic Rings well on flip Edge lettering is crisp
I'm no US coin expert but if this is a forgery it's the best dang forgery I've ever seen.
Visually, it has pretty good detail but uglier tone than what was portrayed in my original picture - it is a bit more uneven. You can see this more clearly in my light blasted pictures below. Interestingly enough, the scratch common to B5s is nowhere near as pronounced as other samples I've seen. In fact, it's barely visible if it is at all there. Whizzing or smoothing is not readily apparent so I'm left . Either way, off to NGC for this lady!
Here is one that I just acquired. In London I saw all of the Dollars in the DNW sale . Most all had been played with in one way or another, that is why they did not sell for the estimates and indeed went unsold. DNW had them at Coinex in London last Friday / Saturday. All including the subject of this post were from the same source. Your 1795 is indeed real . Wish you success in getting a straight Grade. Your purchased 1795 was the best looking of all the Dollars in the sale.
