As I was going through some change the other day and came across this very strange penny. A 2016 penny but it is black and so flat that I cannot feel any raised edges on the Reverse and only parts of the LIBERTY on the Obverse.
I have very limited knowledge of coin errors versus someone messed with a coin or it is just horribly worn for some strange reason.

When looking under magnification, the copper cladding is very ragged where it turns to black or silver - I assume the silver to be zinc. Why is it black like this? Why flat?

To me it looks as if someone managed to rub away the copper plating of the zinc cent. That's why most of what you see is black: the zinc inside the cent. To my knowledge, and I have quite a bit of zinc coins (most WW II occupation coins), zinc just turns black when exposed to human hands and normal environmental conditions.

So to me this looks like post mint damage: not an error but someone used this coin for stress relief or so...
Rest in Peace

Mark, it probably won't even be able to go through a CoinStar machine because of how beat up it is.
