I would strongly encourage everyone to stop discussing how these coins could be moved which could help the thief out for the sake of the victim.

Wrong advice..!!

If the bad guys are here then they know what they have long before we started to discuss it...
.. and if the bad guys are not here..then they will be caught sooner or later...

..and anything that we bring to the table here can only help..IMHO..

This is why we have this CCF forum...

To say that raw coins can't be traced is just not true. Coins are like fingerprints. No two are alike. I personally photograph all of my coins and I suspect many dealers do the same. Most of these coins would be impossible to move in an open market in their holders and even if removed, still very difficult in raw form. These coins will standout like sore thumbs anywhere in Canada.

Could this be a targeted theft?
Not all crooks are stupid.
These coins and notes may not see the light of day in our lifetime.
Collectors come from all walks of life, maybe these guys don't buy and sell on ebay, their collecting methods and goals are truly beyond anything members here can fathom.

DBM- I hope you are wrong, and this was just random. I sure hope that so called "collectors" are not professional thiefs, or else we all have to watch out. Lets hope the cops get the bad guy's sooner than later.

Had a nice chat with Joe yesterday at show, he was quite up beat considering the circumstance, he said he was physically fine which was most important

Did he give you any idea what happened?

I only know him through the shows, and a occasional buyer, didn't know him well enough to ask except his well being but he chatted with many other collectors who seems to have a longer relationship, they might comment on what happened.

Just like famous art works that get stolen from museums and art galleries, they are unable to resell in public...but there's an underground economy where there are high end buyers. I would not be surprised if this was a contracted hire to rob poor Joe. These robbers could be professional job for hire by some scrupulous collector.

I agree, scary, and I suspect there is a level of organization that goes along with a crime like this...hopefully there is insurance in place, glad nobody was harmed, and hopefully there is no underground market or person willing to buy these coins knowing how they were obtained...everyone should be vigilant in looking for these items in the marketplace and watching out for "to good to be true" deals being offered if these coins end up ibeing offered for sale again

The Numismatic Crime Information Center forwarded information as soon as we were notified with little details except for a listing of stolen items. The victim of J & M Coins provided details of the offense today. To NCIC investigators.

The victim parked his vehicle in front of the hotel and went to check in. Upon returning to his vehicle he observed that his inventory had been removed. No other information is available at this time. A more complete list of stolen coins and notes will be available within the next couple of days.

Well there *should* be surveillance footage then. Most hotels have cameras in the (un)loading area.

No offense to Pantego intended, but the last crime reported on the "NCIC" website (based in Texas?) is from a year ago and all their Facebook page has on this is a link to the same article in the first post. It just doesn't give me a warm fuzzy on the reputable scale.

This why I do not drive and keep all my coins in my pockets.

I hope these crooks are locked up and in font of a Judge real quick....
