I was wondering what year would be the best for errors or varieties because I'm planning on buying one truly OBW roll on ebay. It's probably been brought up already. What do you guys think about the best year for Lincoln cents to buy for varieties? All opinions are appreciated.

The 1960-d cents has the most RPMs listed for this year. (but value is not real high for them though)
1972 cents have a lot of doubled dies that year. (there are a high percentage of master die doubled cents that year from all three mints)
So there are plus and minus on several years. Just the big ones are the premium coins. But it is best to buy rolls from coin shows. On ebay, they may be selling OBW rolls of coins that they got in batches. A few rolls, you can tell what is pretty much is in there. So they sell off the dud rolls. But if you have local coin shows, that is where I would buy coins. They usually don't have time to search their coins. I would site down and look over their 2X2s to see what is available there. You can look at the BU coins for varieties. That is a better way for me to find varieties. I like to buy older BU coins. If you spot a RPM or doubled die then that is a plus. Proof singles from the 1960's that are in cello might be good ones to look at. I bought a roll of 1959 cents that were in 2X2s and there were some that were doubled die obverses in them. So take your time after check the tables for rolls first. Then hit the BU coins till the show ends.

Coop, thank you so much for your opinion. I thought 1960 D Lincoln cents would have a lot of RPM's and I was right. Also, you proved a good point on OBW rolls and the 1972 Lincoln cents. Most of the 1972 Lincoln cents show Master Die Doubling. But if you get lucky, you can find geniune Doubled Dies in the OBW rolls or circulation. I don't have any local coins shows in my area. Whenever I go on ebay and look for OBW rolls, I look at them carefully and look for any signs that they have been tampered with or rerolled and sealed to look like a OBW roll. Thank you for this valuable information!

Try to search for coin shows out of your area nearby that you can plan ahead to go to in the future. Here is how to save money for your coin event you wish to go to. Save all you $10 bills for coin buying funds. (you don't get tens often and you can sock them aside for a good purpose) Save these for the coin purchases and then find the next coin show in your area. Then you'll have the money to spend there.

That is what old people do. They try to keep the next generation alerted to what they've learned through years of our experiences. (someday you might be the one passing this information on to the next one as well)

If it were truly unpacked since mintage I think I'd have to go with 1955 in hopes of finding the monster DD.

1983 cents have lots of doubled dies and varieties, then there's the 2009 LP2 which has oodles more.

Been finding a few on Proofs lately, whether in mint packs or raw. On LWC's the 50's have the most wear related errors due to overused dies. The RPMs all seem to follow which Punchers had the shakes or not!

"62" P is a good year for double dies. There are a bunch of them but they won't make you rich.

Although most of them are minor, there are a ton of 2009 doubled die varieties.

I agree with Coop about the 1960-D cents. I pick up OBW rolls whenever I can, they are a lot of fun to search through.

Thank you everyone for your opinions! I appreciate it and learn some vaulable information today. I have made up my mind and bought one roll from 2009 Lincoln Formative Years with WDDR-070 on the end roll. Also known as the "Rail Splitter".

That would be a fantastic original roll find but 99% not on ebay. And there are coin wrapping machines that are easily affordable and old coin wrappers available (original and reproduced) used to imitate Original Bank Wrapped rolls. How do you think all them "shysters" are selling rolls that just happen to have "RARE" end coins? Then they specify "no returns if roll is opened" -
