Yes, do post your zinc rot pennies, if they are bad as mine or worse. I don't even bother looking for a doubled die with this one. Lol. Wouldn't be able to tell. Anyone got any proactive for this Lincoln Cent? I think if there was ever a thing called struck through water, this is what it would look like. But yeah this is a bit extreme.. lol let me hear your jokes on what you think this looks like to you!!

Those coins would make a good lucky dip for a metal detectorist if they were buried, and detected 100 years later.

You would have to be extremely lucky to find them!

It is a copper plating issue. Debris gets trapped between the copper plating and the zinc core.

I have seven rolls of fountain LMC's in the same condition. I never dump where I pick up coin but I spoke with the head teller and told her about these coins. The customer put these rotten cents in their nickel, dime and quarter rolls too. I lost a few bucks on that pickup.

You can always try to sell them as very rare mint errors on ebay of course. A lot of people do so.

For 82's and 83's it would be the very common acne Lincoln coin.

It looks looks like something that would be in poor taste for me to joke about.
1982 was the first year the mint started plating zinc blanks. As John1 noted, it's thought many of them were not clean enough to permit proper adherence of the plating. I agree with Conder101, the first couple years were the worst. Unfortunately though, the quality of the plating has improved only slightly since.

This is a crappy job of Copper Plating. These years were the worst for Copper Plating since the Mint had trouble with debris getting trapped during Copper Plating. CoinMasters, that's a severe case of Zinc Rot right there.
