I don't own this one anymore, but here is a medieval bracteate pfennig from Switzerland, mid 14th century. Medieval coins were almost exclusively silver, and were made by cutting a thin sheet down to weight and hammering it. This one clearly shows where it was cut.

The coin is so thin that it could only be struck with one die - the reverse is the incuse of the obverse.

To my knowledge these were actually pretty common in the first few months that the 20 cent piece was released in San Francisco in 1875.
