Stoneman - your quarter shows a great worn die strike! I'm amazed that the mint used them dies to that extent. The metal grain flow on coins struck with worn dies is so apparent!
Always wondered what apprentice was told to "try" to re-engrave
that die,

That Quarter should be terminal die state ! It only has some of the re-engraving left showing .

It's Progressive Indirect Design Transfer. The most severe case of it I have seen on a Quarter.
