A friend sent me these pics of a 1971 Roosevelt dime she has. Her aunt worked in a bank in the 60's and 70's and had a few interesting coins, this being what I thought was the most notable.

The questions I have are, what type of strike error is this? How rare of an occurrence would this be?

Any other info would be appreciated, I'll be sending my friend the link to this thread so she can follow the conversation. Thanks!!

That's quite the error!!
It's called a double strike, where the die (design stamp) strikes the same blank (unstruck coin) twice. I've never seen one with the obverse on the reverse, so I shall call this the "Flipped double strike"

I really like that it has the date on it twice.

After looking at sold listings on ebay, it looks like this could fetch anywhere from $150 to $500
Rest in Peace

What causes that is an ejection failure. The coin flipped up but didn't clear the well, falling on top of the next inserted blank. Note the other side of second strike has no "reverse details, the blank was under it. Wonder what that coin looked like!
