Who doesn't like a good perpetual pile-on thread? The theme here is "First and Last", aiming to post two coins as far temporally at the opposite ends of a series as we can manage! A few examples to get the gears turning: - Earliest and latest US cent that you have; it could be a 1795 and a 2017, an 1856 and a 2017, or an 1859 and a 1909. - Earliest English hammered penny with the last George III circulating silver penny, the 1970 pre-decimal penny, or a modern Maundy. - First 1921 Soviet coin with last 1991 Soviet coin I'll start: The first and last Chinese cash: Left is an intermediate Ban Liang from the Qin or early Han dynasty, ca. 221-187 BC. Right is the last Chinese cash coin of the final emperor Puyi, 1908-1912. Let's see what our members can come up with

The first Japanese 50 sen (1870, .800 silver) and the last before demonetization (1948, brass). For reference (and because I like to show it off) is an equivalent 2 bu coin from Meiji 1-2 (1868-69), made of "electrum" of 22.3% gold and 77.7% silver. Tokugawa coins could be exchanged for yen at 1 Ryo = 1 Yen until the late 1870s. At inception, the Yen was made to the standards of the Spanish dollar (more specifically the Mexican dollar), but a series of wars against Russia and China, plus falling silver prices (Japan was not on a gold standard in the 1890s) caused significant inflation until the yen was 1:4 with the USD by 1939. The bottom dropped out during the war and during the scramble to cash war bonds after August 1945, and the yen was fixed to the USD at 1:360 under the Bretton Woods system, making the final value of the 50 sen piece about 1/7 of a US cent (in 1948). The Yen was reformed and all old pieces demonetized in 1949.
