Not the sort of medal you are thinking, perhaps, but neat. This pewter medal was struck by Bastian Brothers (hallmarked on the reverse), a well-known shop whose work with dies and medals continues to this day. It was issued in 1931 by the Pennsylvania Chiefs of Police Association to commemorate the association's 18th convention in September of that year. The association was founded in 1914 and, just like the medal's maker, it is still around today and still holding annual September conferences in Harrisburg. The ribbon is black on the left side, golden yellow on the right; a bar is above it, with a place for a name to be inserted. The reverse of that bar holds a safety-pin style fastener. The medal itself measures about 33mm across; the obverse features a Pennsylvania theme, with the seal of the city of Pittsburgh, a steamboat, a steam locomotive, a steel mill and an anvil. On the reverse, the hallmark of Bastian Brothers is centered.

Yea, I asked Jason, the coin dealer across the street, if they were silver and he said for a $1 each, I don't think so! He did, however, put his fancy schmancy tester gun looking thing to it though just to show it off I think. Nope, not silver. Pretty nice looking though, especially if you can get em' cheap.

Very nice TNG! I must admit that seeing what folks have been posting has givin me the bug to really start collecting medals and tokens. I may back off the coinage a tad in order to acquire some. There is plethora of directions to go with them as I'm leaning, kinda not sure which way to go yet. I really like the three I got the other day so I might start there.

Quote: I must admit that seeing what folks have been posting has givin me the bug to really start collecting medals and tokens. I agree. Medals allow for such great detail in design that they are difficult to ignore. The transit tokens I posted (having 45 different designs) really reminded me of the ATB Quarters. They're about the same size, too. I've started reading the book Scopru sent and there is a lot of great info/history in there. Before reading, I scanned the pictures of the tokens and medals and instantly found my favorite: It's the General Motors 25th Anniversary Medal. But, if I want one, it will cost me about $1k.

Toot, there are so many directions, but you can hardly mess up since there are so many medals in any theme to choose from that will somehow fit your collection. Mine so far has been about historical people that I admire and most anyone would recognize who they were and the events. Others are to connect to and compliment my commemorative coin collection. Spruett, that Art Deco General Motors medal is awesome ( and I bet expensive ) I will be looking for one of those. EDIT:152808031997 found one, I was right, a bit out of my league LOL Was $999.99 now only $849.99 !

TNG, I was contiplating going with the Cival War theme and as I was searching for some I realized that there are produced not only by The U.S., but by other countries as well (as is the one I recently posted). I'm going to do a little research on this as I'm a little courios as to why other countries are manufacturing tokens in the theme of the U.S.'s Cival war. And spruett001, that General Motors one is one of the most unique medals I've seen! Very nice!
